The Psychology Behind Terms Like ‘Failing Schools’

The Psychology Behind Terms Like ‘Failing Schools’.

Where’s My Eraser, I like that your professor is asking you (and us as education professionals) to reconsider just falling into using the language of the policymakers who unfortunately are all too happy to label our schools as failing in efforts to privatize. Thank you for a thoughtful post that points out that it is all too easy to have the “failing school” label lead way to self-fulfilling prophecy rather than leading to rising above the label. You call someone a failure long enough and they begin to believe it and wonder if any amount of blood, sweat, toil, and tears can change it. I like that your professor challenges us to find what is working in our schools–even the ones that struggle the most. What is working and how do we celebrate it and build upon it to make for positive changes?
