I agree with the author of this piece that some liberals have given up on unions and lament the loss of union money (and campaign workers) as highlighted ironically by a writer from Mother Jones. I read that article earlier this week. Afterwards, I didn’t know whether to be sad–because as a union member I have witnessed and fought with futility against the decimation of labor in our country–or whether I should be incredulous that this writer for a magazine bearing the name of such a labor icon would dare to eulogize unions before their death. I further agree with Sullivan that unions may need to look beyond the Democratic Party as they reorganize and rebuild for a new paradigm. So the question then becomes how will the Democrats survive when unions leave the fold?
