Traditional Canon of Literature or Modern Lit + Current Events?

I’m currently starting work on my curricular map for next school year for my 12th grade English classes incorporating common core standards. I’d like to hear some feedback from other teachers out there about whether they intend to keep the traditional canon or move more toward modern literature. I currently use Beowulf, The Wife of Bath’s Tale, The Pardoner’s Tale, A Modest Proposal, Pride and Prejudice, Macbeth, and Taming of the Shrew. All literature is connected to modern life through essential questions with current events articles accompanying them. I’m contemplating a move to more modern literature like Catcher in the Rye, The Joy Luck Club, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, etc. Thoughts?
